I’MMATERIAL — Long-Duration Performance Art Series
I’MMATERIAL is an ongoing series of performance artworks examining duration, attunement, endurance, bodily presence, and the instability of live artistic action. The series treats sound, time, breath, repetition, fatigue, and physical limitation as artistic materials.
I’MMATERIAL No.1: The Musical Lie Detector (2025–ongoing)
The first work in the series investigates relationships among artistic intention, lived experience, bodily response, sound, and outward performance. Originally conceived around the idea of performing while connected to a polygraph, the project developed into an artistic research process involving physiological measurement, synchronized audio and video, and immediate self-evaluation.
The project received support from Kone Foundation for 2026 and is being developed through practical sessions at Aalto Studios and Aalto Behavioral Laboratory in Helsinki.
Forced Misophonia: BLAST BLOW PULSE (2020)
A long-duration solo performance artwork created and performed by Arda Cabaoglu Virtanen as part of AKIŞ/FLUX at Sakıp Sabancı Museum in Istanbul, within a curatorial framework connected to Marina Abramović and the Marina Abramović Institute.
Performed eight hours a day for four and a half weeks, the work investigated sustained sound, silence, improvisation, physical endurance, and the changing relationship between performer and audience. It established the artistic foundation for the continuing I’MMATERIAL series.

A long-duration solo performance presented at the University of South Florida. The work continued Cabaoglu Virtanen’s investigation of sustained presence, physical exposure, sound, and the relationship between musical performance and performance art.
Caged Dream of Stuffed Ludwig (2023)
A work for solo trumpet and percussion ensemble by Sangbin Rhie, commissioned by Contemporary Art Music Project (CAMP) for Arda Cabaoglu Virtanen and the University of South Florida Percussion Ensemble.
The work explores relationships among composed structure, physical gesture, fragmentation, and sculptural sound. Its development forms part of Cabaoglu Virtanen’s continuing engagement with living composers and new performance formats.
