Istanbul‘s Cabinet of Curiosities
CAGLA CABAOGLU GALLERY IS TAKING PART IN THE SCOPE NEW YORK ART SHOW TO BE HELD MARCH 02-05, 2017 WITH AN INSTALLATION COMPRISING THE WORKS OF 32 CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS.
Held for the 17th time this year, the Scope New York Art Show will be held at the Chelsea, Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City, in which 60 international galleries participate. Cagla Cabaoglu Gallery will be participating in the Scope New York Art Show with "Istanbul's Cabinet of Curiosities".
Following The Scope Art Show in Miami, Cagla Cabaoglu Gallery, active in Istanbul for 17 years, is introducing its mural collage installation in New York City. This installation is composed of multidisciplinary works inspired by the city, emerging from the cultural layers of Istanbul under the concept entitled “Istanbul’s Cabinet of Curiosities” can be seen at The Scope New York Art Show between March 02 – 05, 2017.
The concept behind “Istanbul‘s Cabinet of Curiosities”* at the same time suggests intercultural dialogue and transitivity.
Objects carried to Istanbul, the Mediterranean, and South America via trade routes of the Phoenicians can also serve as indicators of a process discovering common grounds dating back in time and hinting at dialogue diversities.
“Cabinet of Curiosities” originating with the impetus of the Renaissance, initially brought together items which were discrepant, amazing and heterodox. From there, the eclectic structure posed within framework of a homogeneous universe is reintroduced, ranging from individual items in a collection to the idea and concept of a museum.
Cabinet of Curiosities is a symbol of curiosity, research & inquiry, propagating knowledge, and new perspectives. In addition to being a symbolic conveyance of the personal universe, it also transforms whatever belongs to the culture and accumulation of humanity.
The project involves 32 participating artists from different generations and at the same time attempts to attract attention to Istanbul’s semi-centennial artistic creation through exhibition of these artists.
“Istanbul’s Cabinet of Curiosities” combines works of a very select group of artists and sets sail on a new odyssey in pursuit of the historic accumulation. The project follows in the footsteps of civilizations originating from the time of the Phoenicians, and brings talented artists from Istanbul together in the 21st century. By bringing together the time-integrated works of those artists with the mutual language of the greater global terrain.
